HIGH SCHOOL EFFICIENCY

BOARDING SCHOOL PROJECT DEFERRED. The :New Plymouth High School Board of Governors has for some time past had under consideration a proposal to provide boarding accommodation at the school, and a committee was appointed to make enquiries and report its conclusions to the Board. The committee reported as follows to Wednesday's m eeting: "Your committee has to report that in consequence of the proposal to build a new residence for the principal and adapt the present residence for a boardinghouse having proved too costly, plans and estimates have been prepared which arc now laid before you for a scheme to enlarge the residence to accommodate an assistant master and a limited number of boarders. Much to the regret of your c ommittee this proposal cannot be recommended, as it would be equally costly with the former scheme. Application having been made without success to the Education Department, your committee is of opinion, after having given all proposals most thorough and patient consideration, that it is not at present advisaole to expend the whole of the Board's email funds to provide accommodation for a very limited number of boarders, especially as there is a very grave doubt as to the number that would be prepared to ,p ay the necessary fees, which could not be less than £4O per annum. Your committee therefore recommends that the efforts of the Board be directed in the meantime to bringing the school as present conducted, to the highest educational efficiency, a work that the Board has already commenced by appointing an additional master possessing the highest qualifications for science and mathematics, and who will take up his duties at the commencement of the next term." Upon the motion of Messrs Wilson and Dockrill, it was decided that the secretary write to the chairman of tne High School Board of Governors tn -v certain (1) how much was h orrowod "ocen'tlv by that Board; (2) for what purpose; (3) terms of repayment; (4) the capitation paid for the pupils. The report was r cceived and adopted. It was intimated by members, in speaking to the motion, that though the question of a boarding-school was put on one side for the present, the Board was hopeful of its finances enabling something to be done in the near future, want of funds being the sole reason for delay. The chairman and Mr. Dockrill were appointed a committee to arrange for drainage at the principal's residence.
