THE UNEMPLOYED.
AT CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christehurch, Last' Night. To-day the Mayor granted the unemployed a permit for a procession conditionally on no banners beyond "We want work" being carried, and that the procession was conducted in an"" orderly fashion.
Mr. T.. E. Taylor, M.P., received a telegraph from the Acting-Premier, the Hon. J. Carroll, in reply to a request for a Government grant for the. Christchurch unemployed, stating that the Go. vernment could not subsidise local works, but was doing the best it could so far as public works were concerned.
AT PALMERSTON NORTH. Palmerston N., Last Night. There is considerable indignation here at the statements made (that there is great distress and many unemployed in I'almerston North. The local representative of the Labor Department declares that there is no real distress and practically no unemployed here. The relieving officer of charitable aid knows of no exceptional distress, and states that roads are free from swaggers. The Borough Council decided on Monday to give relief work to thirty men, only married men to be taken.
