OBITUARY
MR. ROBERT COULTER CRAY. The late Mr. Robert Coulter Gray, i.f Okato, arrived in Auckland in April, 1855, in the troopship "Euphrates'' with a detachment of the (lath Regiment, under Captain McGregor He was stationed in Auckland until tile following 1 February, when lie came to New Plymouth. He took part in several engagements in the Taranaki district during the war of 18lill-'lil, including Waitura, Waiveka, Mahoetahi, and Tc Arai. In 1801 he was transferred to Auckland, where he was attached to the Army transport corps at Penrose, and saw active service until 18114. lie .-eceived hi.s discharge in that year, and returned to Taranaki, eventually settling at Okato, where he bad resided for the last forty years, and been,, a popular and familiar figure in the life down the coast. The funeral yesterday forenoon waa a large and impressive cortege, people being present from all parts to do honor to his memory. Rev. S. S. Osborne, of New Plymouth, conducted the burial service. The Maoris of the district assembled in large force, and, garlanded in the green twigs of mourning, cried their piercing lament for the dead.
