During the course of his address ;it a meeting of tile Presbyterian Sooiu] Scrj vice Association to-Sight, Mr. frank Rule, agent of the organisation, said | that at the risk of being laughed at lie would? contend tliat it was very necessary that the characters u f all men wliu advertised in the public prints for wives I fchould be enquired into. He had under , liis care at the present time one of the [ most distressing eases, the details of which lie could not disclose, all the result of an advertisement for a wife, lie knew iis a fnc-t that a man had advertised three times for a wife in the City papers, and as the result a considerable number of women now bore rhe brand of shame. The man boasted of it. It was time something was done to protect women 'who were foolish enough to answer such advertisements from men who were vicious enough to ' adopt that plan of carrying on their dastardly work. " . , The Rev. T. Tait said he was «>r.>foundly convinced that the crying evil mentioned by Mv. Rule was as much abroad in Christcliurch as in any other city, and it had jot to lie tackled. 11 r Rule should be urged to act in the matter. Tile sex question required to be grappled with. Tilings went on in the city, in factories and boarding-schools, that should impress them, with the necessity of something being done.
