VOLUNTEERING

THE TARANAKI RIFLES. Captain F. T. Bellringer, who has for the past four years been connected with the Taranaki Rillcs, and in command of the company for about three years, has been appointed adjutant of the 4th Battalion Wellington Rille Volunteers (Taranaki), in succession to Captain C. 11. Weston, who recently resigned and was placed on the active list, unattached.) Lieut. C. B. Lever is now in command of the Taranaki Rifles.

In bidding farewell to the Taranaki Rilles on Monday evening, so lar as his direct connection with the corps is concerned, Captain F. T. Bellringer remarked that it was a considerable wrench for him to sever his connection with the company. He had felt it an honor to command such a corps as the Taranaki Rillcs, and he was pleased to see that the individual members of the company were endeavoring to uphold its lino traditions. During the whole time he had been in command the behaviour ] of the company had been such as never to have caused him a moment's anxiety. At last Easter encampment the conduct of the corps had been really excellent. The corps was now over full strength and recruits were coming forward freely. He hoped that his successor would cuntinuc the policy recently inaugurated of weeding out tile bad attenders, for unless the men attended regularly it was impossible for them to become really efficient. Captain Bellringer concluded by saying that although in a way lie was severing his connection with tile iaianaki Rilles, he would always take a great interest in their welfare, and he would ask them to remember that they were the No. 1 Company of the Battalion, and should always endeavor to be No. 1 in drill, behaviour, attendance, and general efficiency.
