GOVERNMENT RETRENCHMENT
• OONGRATULATIONS OF THE FARMERS' UNION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. -. Christchurch, Last Night. „,"'• G - Leadley moved at the meeting ot the North Canterbury executive of Me Farmers' Union to-day, "That the executive express gratification with the efforts of the Government in the direction of retrenchment in the public services. The speaker said the Government deserved credit for tackling the Suestion, seeing the position the Dominion had got into in view of the large amount of unproductive work that had ™?™^. e Fr iOU3 . I y- Tlle Government was entitled to praise for attempting to bring things within a manageable comKi ■ , the Far mers' Union had not hesitated to blame the Government for what it deemed to be wrong in tHe past, it should not now withold praise when it was due.
Mr. D. -Tones said it was a matter for !St C J t,oll A? 1, , t retr enohmept had been effected At the same time it was to be regretted that these economies were necessary It was notable that the political party making retrenchments had let the people in for increased expenditure on public services in the first place.
Mr Wilfrid Hall said it was a matter for gratification that the Government had to straighten out conditions it had itself created. Upon the last occasion of that sort the Government responsible for the tangle went out of office, Waving its successors to face the music. This (Atkinson) Government true* to clean things up, but got no credit for it* efforts, and just as tliin«s were ibeing got on to a satisfactory footing it went out of office. The motion was carried.
