PUBLIC BENEFACTION LOST
By Telegraph.—Press Association, i
Mastertoii, Wednesday. Last year Dr. Hosking. senior, generously offered £3OO for the erection of memorial women's baths at Masterton. Tenders were invited and the lowest tender for a bath of iL reduced size was £378. Thi- lender Dr. Hosking refused to accept, being of opinion that a large bath could lie erected for the sum available if the work were carried out by the borough staff under the borough engineer. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council, a Ilea ted discusison took place and an amendment by the Mayor that the donor's wish be ' carried 'out was declared lost.
Dr. Hosking now definitely withdraws his oiler, stating that under no circumstances \vill he reconsider his decision, but that he will cable Home for £SOO worth of radium instead, which he thinks may probably serve a more useful purpose. The withdrawal of the offer has caused general disappointment in the community.
