"GONE; NOT FORGOTTEN."
AN EX-SCHOOLMASTER'S MEMORY. One of those little incidents which throw a warm glow upon the daily round of life has just occurred in connection Willi Hie passing of Mi. William Tissiman, an inmate of the Old People's Home,'at Hie New Plymouth Hospital recently. On the day before Mr. Tissiman's 'death the secretary of the hospital Board, received the' following letter from Mr. Kenneth Mclver, of Blenheim: "It has come to my knowledge that Mr. W. Tissiman i»' in your Home. I have seen several of his old scholars 'amongst whom I count myself), it ml they have asked me to write and ascertain whether Ihe old fellow wants anything. He is too proud to write direct."
(Mr. Lepper showed the letter to the old gentleman, and he, was much touched by this sentiment from those who had been boys at his school. He wrote a reply, and Mr. Lepper also undertook to write. Next day, however, he was gone, and it fell to the secretary to telegraph news of this to Mr. Mclver. Back came the wire: ''Provide a decent funeral; anil send account to me."
Once again, then, was the desire of the "old boys" thwarted, for Mr. Tissiman's own relatives undertook this. Mr, Mclver lias now written that many of Mr. Tih«iman's old scholars were desirous of erecting a tablet over the grave, and asked Mr. Leippcr to obtain <|uotations from local monumental masons for n slab bearing the following inscription: "In memory of William Tissiman, obit 21st June, 100!), aetat 08 years. Bora at Scarborough England. ])ied at New Plymouth. Erected by his pupils at Renwick school, Marlborough, where for 27 years he labored. Sic Iraiwit gloria niundi." The chairman said he had not seen liis wav to accede to the request. He pointed out that the Hoard had set aside a plot in the cemetery for the interment of inmates dying in the Home, and had provided for a uniform tablet over each grave. A tombstone such as 'this gentleman proposed would look entirely out of .place there. Messrs McDonald and Hill expressed regret that such a'commendable desire should be thwarted. The secretary remarked that Mr. Tisliman's son and son-in-law had been here at tire funeral, and had Ibecn refused permission to erect a memorial other than that approved by the Board. There were two alternatives. The body could be moved into another part of the cemetery and the memorial erected there: or Mr. Tissiman's old scholars could donate, <;ay, a couple of memorial seats for the hospital grounds. It was decided that the secretary should write explaining the position to Mr. Mclver.
