MEDICINAL WINE
AN ANOMALY IN THE LAW. By Telegraph.—Press Association' Auckland, Saturday. At Te Kuiti on Thursday, A. B. litsarnann was charged with selling liquor conlniuiug 31.03 per cent, of proof spirits, known as "Moleda port wins." A constablo purchased a bottle for four shillings. The contents were analjaed by the Public Analyst, and upon hii report the charge was laid. The win# was alleged to be ten times stronger than ale, and half the maximum strength of brandy. Defendant had (old twelve eases in a very short time. The Magistrate found defendant guilty of * breach of section 273 of the Act, but lit view of the circumstances of the case and defendant's bona fides and the anomaly in the law in respect to the «ale. of medicinal wine in a Maori diatrict, lie dismissed the charge on defendant I'aying ,t8 2s Od costs'. It was suggested that the anomaly in section 273 at affecting Maori districts be brought under the notice of the Attorney-General.
