AT NELSON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Nelson, Friday. A deputation representing the local unemployed waited on the Mayor today. They stated that there were 50 or GD men workless. Several of them were married, but it was shown that only 110 were entered On the books of th(! Government Laibor Bureau, of whom seven were married. The Mayor replied that he was unable to do anythin;; out- of the general fund, as the Corporation had ailroady exceeded its ovc:d-.'.itt. jut probably they might be able t,: ...„ something out of the gasworks account. Some of the gas mans would be laid in districts not yet conrested.
RELIEF IN WELLINGTON. THE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. Wellington, Last Night. The position of the subsidy to be given towards the relief of the unemployment difficulty was l considered .by Cabinet this afternoon. "We lmve not considered the proposals of the deputation with regard to making recreation grounds Or a road to the signal station," said the Acting-Prime Minister subsequently, "and the question of the Government's contribution towards the cost of a fever hospital will have to await a full meeting of Cabinet. We have decided to give a subsidy of £2 for £1 up to £3OOO towards) the cost of carrying out the neeessary extension works at Victoria College. That we regard as a national work. The College is in an unfavorable position in regard to endowments compared with other university colleges, and its fees are lower and the work is a necessity." Seven married men wero sent to the lailway relief works at Stratford to-day by the labor Department, and on Monday ten are to be sent to Nelson to work on the Kiwi section of the Midland railway. ,Thc Wellington Citizens' Fund is now up to about £BOO. Christchurch, Last Night. It was reported at the Trades Hall tins morning that most of the uncmployed had got tired of calling, in vieuof their past experiences of the hopelessness of getting news of work there. J hey are stilted to be awaiting the result of Sunday's appeal at Lancaster lark and at the Opern House, also for details of the Trades Council committees scheme for the utilisation of the money realised in finding employment. \\ orkilcss men who have been to the country districts looking fo r work report at the Trades Hall that there is none procurable. One man spent three or four days attempting to get employment in the country, but without sueecs.-'. He stated that unless a man is known in a district in which he applies for work he has no chance of a job.' there are between thirty and forty'unemployed painters on the Union's employment book at present.
