A meeting was held atPleasanl Point last night to endeavor to arrange a motor car service from Timaru for maib and newspapers three mornings a week, a« no train runs out from Timaru. If it can be arranged, the service may be extended to Fuirlie. An alternative idea was put forward, that the Department should try a petrol motor ear on the line.
AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION. Tiinaru, Saturday Night. A conference of delegates of local bodies, agricultural associations, and schools, was held to-day to consider a proposal to contribute to the cost of an instructor for the South Canterbury education district. Dr. Hilgendorf, of Lincoln College, was present, and explained the nature of the teaching required, and the advantages of such instruction. Delegates were generally very favorable, on condition that a good instructor could be obtained, and the meeting adjourned to allow the Education Board to endeavor to obtain such a man, when the conference will resume pud discuss the matter of contributions further. The chairman, a member of the Board of Education, said the Board might have to oiler £SOO a year to a suitable man.
RAILWAY WEIGHT CERTIFICATES. Cliristehureh. Saturday Night. Replying to the request of Mr. Witty, M.P., that the Railway Department should supply consignors of goods with duplicate topics of weight certificates free of charge, the Minister concludes a lengthy letter: ''After giving the matter every consideration, I regret that I cannot see my way to supply duplicate certificates free of charge, but the DeI partment will, as hitherto, supply them on payment of the regulation fep."
A SCHOONER BEACHED. Cisborne, Saturday. A very heavy gale was raging along the coast last night and this morning. The auxiliary schooner Kaco, at Tokomaru Bay, after having weathered the storm all night, got into a dangerous position, and was unable to work out of the roadstead. ■ By skilful handling Captain Skinner beached her near the wharf in a safe position without doing any damage.
