DISTRICT NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondents.) RAHOTU A well-attended meeting of Rahotu bachelors was held on Saturday evening to make arrangements for the Rahotu (bachelors' ball. It was decided to hold it on August 6th, and a strong committee of fourteen was set up, with Mr. A. D. Fielder as secretary, to make necessary arrangements. As this is the first invitation ball to be held in the I ne-w hall, the committee intend making a special effort to ensure its being tlio best ever held here. The rifle match to have been fired here on Saturday last between teams representing Warea and Rahotu clubs, did not take place owing to the wet weather. It will, however, eventuate next Saturday week. A euchre match took place here on Tuesday night between teams representing l'ungarehu and Warea. After some interesting games Pungarehu proved the winner by 27 games to 18. During the evening both teams sat down to dinner at Hood's hotel, and altogether a most enjoyable evening was spent. Mr. W. C. Green, for many years manager of the Crown Dairy Company's local factory and now manager of the Takaka Co-op. Dairy Co.'s factories at Takaka, is at present on a visit to Rahotu renewing old acquaintances. I am pleased to report that Mr. Green is looking well.

The local daily factory recently called tenders for cutting, carting and stacking about 250 cords of pinus insignus. I understand that about 24 tenders were received at prices ranging from 23s to 9s. The tender of Jlr. Orr, of Pungarehu, at the latter price was accepted. It is reported that Mr. Knowles has sold his Kaliui road farm to a Toko buyer. The weather has been very "wintry, and as a result of the rains the road 6 are very wet and sloppy. The main road from the Kaliui road to the post office is particularly bad in this respect, being covered with slush, whilst there is a patch of clay right in front of the post ofliec that ladies must find difficult to negotiate without at times going over their shoe tops. If the wet weather continues the post office will be isolated from the metalled road. A few loads of metal would easily end the trouble. Mr. A. Rayner, our telegraph boy, is away on a well-earned holiday. He is being relieved by Master Stanley Baker Mr. Stewart Clark, of the Kaliui road', intends removing shortly to Toko, where he lias purchased a farm. There was a good attendance at New- . sale 011 Tuesdl >y- Most lines i>f cattle appear to have an upward tendency.

1 understand the Pungareliu Dairy Co. intend enlarging their factory at rungarenu, so as to accommodate two more vats, as the factory, which contained six vats, was last year in the flush of the season barely sufficient to cope (with the supply. I Mr. J. Young, of Oaonui, intends (Contesting tine vacant scat on the Board of Education. Mr. Jas. Young takes a keen interest in local affairs and should make a good member. He T at .present chairman of the Oaonui school Committee, chairman of the Paril'aka Road Board, and a member of the fcgmont County Council. As this extreme end of the district has not had a member for some time Mr. Youn<r will receive good support. " _ I note the Tavanaki County Council intend erecting a toll-gate on'the Main hputh road at Puniho. Residents' of the fcgmont county will then be, as it were in a paddock surrounded by toll-gates' and will lie unable to get out to the railway without paying at least one toll. Hawera county was the first to erect one gate on the Main South road, then titliani county erected" two gates on the Elthflm road, and now the Tara* naki county is blocking the last outlet. nL c ™ rse c , 4 tlu '=- < ' no toll-gate on the Opunake-Stratford road, but as th;» road is not finished it is out of the question as a means of ingress for through traffic A railway to Opunake or a harltm °l" mako solve the probAnother of tHo series of euchre parties m aid of the Rahotn Hall funds «ok place on Wednesday evening.
