To the Editor. Sir,—ln the absence of "that versatile correspondent, G.H.M.," kindly allow mc space in your valuable columns to put a few facts before "Enigma." He seems to have the mistaken idea that because duty is paid in Invercargill, therefore the whole of the beer is consumed within the • Invercargjll "dry" a l C t« lSo , lltulan <l has a papulation of 50,000, which is supplied by five different branches of the railway running from Invercargill as centre to the dif" ferent parts of the district This means that Southland' (not Invercar"il[) has consumed 4000 (not 5300, as stated) gallons, so that your correspondent should rememilier more of Southland is "wet" than "dry." Another fact that has to be taken into consideration is that the Dominion's consumption of alcoholic liquors per head per annum has increased from 11.2 callous .in ]8!)S to 11 I gallons in 1007.—1 am, etc., AQUA.
