Armstrong followed. A steady defence was maintained, varied by occasional fine hits. Hirst was more finished in his bowling than Barnes, who kept a wonderful length. «^ ; Brearley relieved Barnes at W, and a few runs later Armstrong wascfttight off him by Lilley, who was standing back. Cotter was promptly disposed of for a couple and Carter for a single. The ninth wicke fell at 171, Rhodes securing four wickets for 7 runs.

Laver joined Trumper. The latter smote Rhodes four times in succession and secured a fourer for each. Then Lilley, standing'back, caught Laver before he scored.
