CHEAP CABLES.
REDUCTION INITIATED BY NEW ZEALAND. Received July 2, 10.20 p.m. London, Jul;- t. The Pacific Cable Company's oiler arose from Sir Joseph Ward's proposal lo reduce the terminal charges for press messages to a halfpenny a word, conditional on the Pacific Company reducing its share to 2d. The Pacific Company's counter oiler was 2>/4d, subject to New Zealand reducing the terminal rate to a halfpenny, making a l)d rate. The new rate will operate after twenty-one days' notice r nas been given to the Beme Postal Conference. It is expected the new rate will be initiated on August Ist.
