. One or two men in this district have found, much to their chagrin and astonishment, that in marrviug wives they marry their debts as well. A nod's as good as n wink to a blind mule. The North Taranaki Hunt Club has decided to issue •'ipialilieation tickets" to members wishing to qualify their horses as hunters, for the cluoVannual race meeting. The tickets will be initialled by the master or depute master lat each meet,, and should the ncccI sary number of signatures not be secured, the master may decline to i.-isuc a certificate.

"A man is known by th e company he keeps," is a saying very old anil true, ft would be a hard matter to judge people on the letters they write, Hlld tile Hospital Board takes some of its correspondence with the proverbial grain of • salt, particularly \vlien the writer of the letter is a person who, after owing hospital dues for a number of years, sends a Jong explanation of his financial, or rather unlinancial position. There is a fearful sameness about these cll'usions as a nlle, but every rule lias its exceptions. For instance, one letter before' yesterday's meeting was from a woman wliose husband owed an account, and was now a patient in another hospital. "1 can do nothing until he's either dead or better," she wrote. The; Board decided to await developments. Two men went a-iiunting. There were several more, but onlv tile two mutter as far as this store is concerned. One had a horse, the 'other had. nine, and that was where the story began. It was a new horse, a iirautl' new Hunter, and bis owner lent him to a friend at his,t Thursday's meet. Mounted on his own trusted steed he set out to give the latest acquisition a lead y-ivcr a fence near by, but his horse stuck fast —head on one side, tail on the other, The new horse objected to this, and also to the vicious dig -of the slurs' from his rider, who tried to vein him in. Then came the fun, for the spectators, and a fall,, which was not fun, for the huntsman. The owner now seated hiinscU! upon the bucking broncho, with a view of showing that lie had not lent in a conliding friend an unintinageable animal. And lie dub but it was a warm few minutes that he spent in proving it.
County finance is still a burning question in the Oniata riding. One exmember of the council is strenuously urging the ratepayers to sever from the Taranaki County by obtaining the suspension of the Counties Act over the Oniata riding. Diligent study of the Counties Act fails to reveal any provision for such a course or any machinery that sepnis likely to serve the purpose, There are certain (countiesexempt from the Act, but their exemption was an act of the legislature, and the law provides that there can be no rescinding of the proclamation whicn shall eventually bring those counties under the provisions of the Act. There may be such provision, of course, and doubtless the Oniata ratepayers would be glad to see the authority for the proposed course. It is not clear that the suspension of the Counties. Act, if obtained, would relieve tlie fliuata, i'i(|l||g of i(s T>rc.s,cnt excessive indebted- | W-'SS."

The honorary surgeons, when called in to operations at the iucal hospital, arc entitled to a foe, which is chargeuble to the patient, xne services of the medical superintendent are included in the patient's weekly payments, Jt is a common thing for people to complain, «>t this extra 'fee, though it is run, large. The precaution seems iiistilied, for. the Sew Plymouth hospital's word of surgical operations is one to be prou.(| or. When there is a delicate opevatlou, and tile patient's life depends on the most careful treatment and attention, u guinea paid for the extra surgeon is money well s]>cnt. , To grudge the guinea and lose a life would be hut a poor sort of a policy that would give the victim's friends something to talk about, Recently a man .passed as close as man can pass to the border line, Surgical skill in the local hosrnta} saved Bis Tile.
