SCULLING.

THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP. fly Teicgrapn.—l*ress Association. Wanganui, Saturday. Visitors aiv now airivitijr i.i numbers for the sculling match on 'itosdav, iaUrest in wliica increases from ii..y t'j day. The weather, which lias .been wvt ami squally tor »v« a week, is now beautifully tine. Tne ehiiiiniiou ami ex-champion finished their hard won; 10-day, aud will now take things easy. Uoth men are in excellent condition,. and a desperate struggle is expected. • Certainly it should lie one of the ilnivc races ever wunessed. 'fnougn having l had some very severe tria.s, Webb has had no recurrence of the arm trouble which interfered with him last December. He is as well as lie ever was, and is quietly confident of inrnijg- the scales. The champion, on the other hand, has the utmost confidence in hi; owa abilities to win. Waiig.inui, Uiil Night Though the sciMing inauh between Arnst and Webb, an event of worldwide importance, is to take place on Tuesday, public interest is not so keen as might be expected. This is :io doubt to be accounted for ,by the fact that the last meeting of these men proved a fiasco. After tiiut race \Velib, wiiu is a true sportsman, earned magnanimity to an extent which was foolish by reiterating that he had be'en beaten on his merits, having gone to the post n his best form. This was known by a select few to have been, anything but a true condition of affairs, but Webb persisted in publicly extolling what was really a fine performance by Arusi. Tile consequence is that to-day many people believe Webb has no chance of winning. The opposite opinion is held by those who have been associated with the challenger. While acknowledging Arnst's undoubted ability, they say that Webb's real powers are not known by the outside world. He ha 6 now got rid of the [arm trouble, and if reports are to be believed, he recently did a trial which shows that if Arnst wins Tuesday's race it will be a memorable one. Arnst was out to-day, and the manner in which he drove his boat along would lead to the belief that if Webb beats him the race will be memorable. Barring accidents, a great race is sure to take place.

An admirer of William Webb, in a letter to the Sydney Sun from Wanganui, hesitates not to eSpress the greatest confidence in the ex-champion's ability to lower Arnst's colors this jfcime. He says:—"All of Webb's friends A re confident that he will confound those critics who were so wise after the last race, when they whooped so loudly about Arnst being a marvel, equal to the best the world has produced. What interesting reading some of the paragraphs penned concerning Arnst and Webb will make after June 22!" Richard Arnst. writing to the same paper, from Wanganui, says:—"Barry has offered me £2OO expenses if I will go to England and row him. But he is too 'late. If he offered me that much before Webb had challenged me I would not have hesitated to have gone home to row him in July. Barry must come out, to Australia if he wants a go at me, and unless he comes next summer he goes without a race. If I heat Webb I prefer to go to Canada and meet Durnan in October."
