'A social was tendered to Mr. W. i. Wood at Palmerston North last night. A presentation was made to the ex member, consisting of a medal and a cheque for £,27(1. The death is announced of Mr. E. G. Lane, chemist (says' a Press Association message from Oamaru). Mr. Lane for some years ill his younger days made frequent trips to foreign parts as a member of the mercantile marine service. He arrived in Victoria in 1851. spent ten yearn on the' goldlields, and later crossed to New Zealand. He was a chemist at Port Chalmers, Waikouaiti, and Diinedin. coining to Oamnru in 18118.

The death occurred at Marton on Thursday morning of Mrs. W. A. Lightbourne, relict of th'e late Dr. Lightiiourue, iif Hawera. Deceased, who had been livinu' with her grandson at Marton (Mr. W. Liglitbour.ie) for the past three veiirvreachvd the age of 7Uyears. She had been in ill-health for 'many months. She was -born at Everton, near Liverpool, in 1837, and came to New Zealand thirty years ago, arriving in Duiredin, Her husband afterwards prac tised in Wellington, Keilding, Wangairii, and Hawera, at which place he died, The remains will be taken to Hawera for interment.
