.MAY HALLBTT SUED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. May Hallctt was- sued civilly for£l7 2s Oil for 'tin' hire of a motor ear by Inglis Bros. Counsel naid defendant | was willing to make a substantial offer to reduce Hie debt, .but was at present working in n bar at £•> per week. The evidence was that defendant, under the name of Alias Donald, had engaged a ear and paid £lO deposit. She afterwards got ii back from the chauffeur and gave him £.3 for his personal qjpenses. The Magistrate miid it was evident she had travelled through the length and breadth of the North- Island in the ear and made an order for immediate payment i or in default fourteen days' imprisonment.
BOOKMAKERS FINED. Wellington, Friday. ! The adjourned cases in which William j and James Ham were charged with bookmaking in Willis street on various dates were dealt with by Mr. Kiddell, S.M., to-day. The defendants are father and son. William Ham pleaded gtiilty and was fined £3 and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. On the second -charge he was also convicted and fined £1 and costs, or 48 hours'. His father. James Hani, was\flned £2 and costs, in default 48 hours'- imprisonment, BREAKING AND ENTERING. Ashtrarton, Friday. James George Murphy, with several aliases, to-day .pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on a charge of breaking and entering and theft; and on a further charge of escaping while in lawful custody.
