EDUCATION BOARD.
The Education Jio-ird concluded its monthly meeting yesterday, Mr. James Wade presiding. SCHOOL CADETS. The Board approved the following fresh appointments of cadet officers, acting on the recommendation of Map ll ' Sandford and the licad.nil.sters interest-ed:-Central School, Xo. 1 Company, Lieutenants J. R. Sullivan (senior) and Master If. Mcliahey; Central Xo. 2, Captain J. H. Bocock'aud Lieutenants Dry (senior) and (.!. VYhitcoiuiie; Stratford District High School, Xo. 1 Company, Captain F. V. Bowler, Lieutenants L. Haworth and F. E. Brown; Stratford District High School, Xo. 2 Company, Captain J. W. Thomas and Lieutenants J. Cuthbert and L. Mail: Stratford Xo. I) Company. Captain Stanley W. Dyson; Bell block' and Hillsborough detachment (Fitzroy Company), Lieutenant 0. Frcyberg. CARDIFF 'SCHOOL SITE. The Cardiff school committee wrote protesting against being deprived of the revenue derived from tiie lease of a portion of the sclioolgroiiuil for the purposes of a store—ft was decided to inform the committee that, under clause 0!) of the Board's regulations, it was necessary that all funds derived from lease of school sites must.be paid to the Board, and that the Board could not pay over the money to the committee without committing a breach of their own regulations. Mr. Morrison said that quite « number ; of committees were letting their school ■ sites and collecting rents without t'ic ; knowledge of the Board, and these com- ' mil tecs were ''laughing up their sleeves' 1
at those who paid over the moneys to the Board.
THE AIUiICt'I.TVUAL INSTRUCTOR. The sub committee (Messrs. Wade and Tiseh) recommended (lie reappointment of Mr. R. McK. Morison as instructor of agriculture for another year, the instructor to 'pav two visits during Hie year lo each school can-vine, on niriculiura! work, and thai if considered necessary Ire be permitted to pay extra visits during the year, the number of such visits not to exceed six to any one school; that, if required, he instruct Saturday classes for teachers at X T ew fPly month and Stratford'; that the remuneration he at the rate of CI .is for each visit to each school, and ,-Cl Is for each Satur-
dav class.—The report was adopted. DEPARTMENTAL DIFFICULTIES. Tiie Department wrote to the ell'ect that the Minister could not accede lo the request for a residence at Tarata, where the teacher at present resided in portion of the school building, which portion was now required for school purposes owing to the increasing attendance. The letter suggested that the teacher shonl* obtain a-house, and upon Unit being done the Minister would grant house allow
ance.—This letter had been referred to Mr. .1. S. Wilson, chairman of the Tnrata
committee, who replied that there was no house available.—After a long dis-
cussion, it was decided that the oversee,, should arrange to have the partition removed and a central partition, with an extra chimney, erected. The Department will he informed that there is no residence obtainable for the teacher, but that he can live at a boarding-house. The Department wrote in a similar strain with regard to the Marco schoolA reply will be sent that the Board requires the rooms for school purposes, and as there is no house .for the teacher, I'she will be entitled to the usual house I allowance. DOUOLAS SCHOOL SITE.
With reference to the Board's application for'a lease of the 10-acre section near Douglas, the (ieneral Manager of Railways wrote that the land in'question -was at present leased with other land to Mr. A. Walter, of Douglas, and if the Board could arrange with liini to surrender his lease there would be no objection to the land in question being leased to the Board for a term of 14 or 21 years subject to the Department's right to resume possession if any portion of the laud should be required for railway purposes.—Referred to Messrs. Kennedy and Morison. OEX'ERAL.
Mr. 11. li. Worthington, commissioner at I'lmiwhakau, in acknowledging receipt of a letter urging a special effort to Jmvp tin; school grounds beautified, wrote: "If your Board expects me to run tiro whole hliow mi my own account I must dec-lino. The inspector evidently was not aware that I have tried to Ret up working bees. ( suppose that effort fount*' for nothing. Why, they won't even turn up to annual meetings." He asked the Hoard to accept his resignation, and to appoint another commissioner in his place. The Albert and "KeiM schools were grunted permission to milieu t.he midday recess to half-an-hour for Hie winter months, subject to the teachers' approval.
Mr. Long, teacher at Matau. was granted permission to lake his two •weeks' extra holiday at the end of the midwinter holidavs.
The Denbigh committer was granted per.misMon to make the platforms on l'"'' «'li"»! « ' movable, subject to the usual conditio-,!*.

The Hoard declined to subsidise the efforts of the Opunake school committee for tin- establishment of a sckool library. The further consideration of the selection of a site for the York school was' referred to .Mr. Trimble.
