The Daily News. TUESDAY, JUNE 15. AMERICAN MEAT TRUST.
Till' report that Mm ramifications of tlii' Chicago Meat Trust a rii to be extended to Australasia 'has naturally excited some 'anxiety in the States ol the Commonwealth and the centres ol New Zealand. The assertion that agents of the Trust are. already in these parts arranging for the purdiase of stock is refuted by stock owners and others lo cally interested, hut so far nothing really definite has been elicited. It is a matter of common knowledge that the Trust lias been spreading its tentacles in the Argentine, where it lias outained control of two large native concerns, leaving live others to lie taken up before a monopoly is secured. British capital, however, is .said to be interested ill three of these, and the Trust may not be able to ucuuirc them without a struggle, 'lac aim of Hie Trust, it is believed, is not su much to capture the mutton' market' as to secure the beef trade, and if it can secure the remaining Argentine works it will have practically the beef trade of the world under its command. It is feared by many that American "enterprise" ill the Argentine may seriously prejudice the standing of New Zealand mutton and lamb in the Home market. The Argentine article, it is J -pointed out, has wonderfully improved of late "years, until nuw the mutton grown in that country can hardly be distinguished from that grown ■*- this Dominion. The dill'erencc in price is gradually receding, and it is expected that wry soon the best Argentine motion will'fetch as much as the best New Zealand. Our lamb, however, has still a market of its own. It is therefore regarded as certain that if the' Trust acquires control of the Argentine, concerns Xew Zealand companies will be faced with a higgern problem than ever before in order to meet tile front'whicll the Trust will present. It is suggested with a good deal of wisdom that all the Xew Zealand companies should be represented at Home by a single office, and that some sort of working arrangement should be entcml into in regard to placing supplies on the injirket, so as to avoid disastrous unloading* at unfavorable times. It remains to be seen j whether the report of an extension of the Trust's operations to Xew Zealand is verified, but as against the probability it is almost certain tile people would j* not permit any such proceeding, and \ would liud expression in legislative iu- \ terferencc with. such a proposal. The \ danger, therefore, is nut so much to be f feared from the possible entry of th • I 'Trust intu Xew Zealand as from compelition in England. What really seems necessary is that Xew Zealand coiupanii s should lake conceited action in meeting American competitors ou the London l market, instead of acting independently r of each other, as at present. The Trust i is;a combination, and should be met by I combination,
