RADIUM MIRACLE.
REMARKABLE CURE REPORTED FROM AMERICA. "A remarkable cancer cure by radium" is' reported from Flower Hospital, New York, where Professor Diffenbacl'i and Dr. Helimith have obtained results in a case which have caused them to express tile belief that a final victory in the war with cancer is in sight. Without endorsing tills optimistic view, which may raise hopes that might not be fulfilled (says a Home correspondent). I give the following official statement, made to me bv the superintendent in charge of the" Flower Hospital. He says: ''Six months ago an elderly man was admitted to the hospital suffering from a cancerous growth, as large as' two fists, in the stomach. The tissue was examined under the microscope, and showed beyond the possibility of a doubt that it was peculiarly malignant. It could not be operated on ibecauso the roots 'were too widespread. Professor DiefTcnbnch became interested in the case, and called in Dr. Ilelmuth; and after a coiwultation tliev obtained-the patient's consent to use 'radium, "Three incisions were made into the growth, and a small speck of radium in a gelantine capsule, the total cost of which was £2O, was inserted in eacli incision, after which the cuts were sewn up. Tire gelatine dissolved, and the radium began its direct action on the cancer. The first effect was' the great prostration of the patient, who was in a highly nervous state and generally run down when admitted to the hospital. "Five weeks after the operation the growth was greatly reduced iit size, and tbe patient Iwas allowed to go home. Another examination, which was made last month, showed that the cancer had entirely disappeared, the only trace remaining being a lump smaller tlran a pigeon's egg, which does not display tinv symptoms of cancel', and is'.simply a nodule of the scar tissue such as ,remains after healing any moderately-sized wound. The patient gives every evidence of a complete cure. Wi are now treating several other similarly. All are .showing the benelicial effects of the action of the radium, which causes a rapid contraction of the tumor and an entire chan«e in its character." e
