Our local riflemen paid a vis'it to Rahotu on Prince of W ales' Birthday to compete in "the rille match, and nearly all of them got a little prize-money. .Mr. Fred. Jenkins tied with Mr. A. 31. Guy, of Kaponga, for the first prize of £5, both searing !)7 points each. The o.ner competitors who won prize-money were Messrs. W. li. Clarke, W. 11. Julian, and W. B. Smith, who won 5s rn:<h.
The contractors (Messrs. Hart and pen warden) are making good progress with Mr. Charles Wells' new "house on his Puniho farm. A meeting of the Farmers' Vni'en was held in the -Hall on Monday night, a fai r number of members 'being present. Mr. J. Burgess occupied the chair. A Social will be held on the 24th instant. The [lowing ladies.' committee was formed: Mesdames Millar, Larking, McLaclilan, •judge, and Clothier. It was decided to ask Miss Francis to supply the music. The footballers of the Okato team will lie pleased to hear that Sullivan, who got hurt a week or so ago while playins against Opunake at Okato, is now netting on as well as can be expected. Hie Egmowt county crusher is getting near the end of its work for this season. The crusher is now at the last heap of ■2OO yards at tlie. Waiwewnui river, and ougiit to finish about Thursday if the weather permits. ■Mr. 'H. Corbett finished his contract for metalling on the Ruekere "road on Monday afternoon. The weather here lately'has been very showery, and the milk supply lias decreased a great deal. The fourth round for 'Mr. V. P. Robinson's tropliv was tired for on Saturday. Only six competed, and Mr. P. Kivell -eiciirod a leg-in. Following are tile scores:—
EAIIOTU. t The shooting competition held under £ the auspices of the lowil Rifle Club took i place here on Thursday, and proved i most enjoyable. 'Arrangements had lieen ' made for a nomination of forty, but sixty-five entered; and. though the arrangements were perfect, it was found : impossible *to get all the competitors through, and as a result eighteen were unable to shoot at the tiOOyds, and some of tho*c W.lro did shoot had a very bad light. This! was noticeable in the teams 1 match, where some good sliote cracked up. The shooting all round was excel- , lent. The changeable light- tried some ! young .shots, though it is doubtful if a j letter day could have been chosen. '1 Ire J initial meeting was voted a great success. Shooting sta'iited at about 8.30 a.m. The best individual scores were put up bv A. H. Guy, the Xew Zealand representative, who scored 32 at 200. 35 at 500, and 30 at OOOvck, a total of 07/ F. Jenkins, a tyro, also put on 07, viz., 33 at 200, 34' at 500, and 30 at 600 yds. On the count back, Guy wins first money. The best range scores were -J. Rothery (Rahotu) and Richardson (Okato). 34' each at 200 yds; A. H. Guy, 35. and l'\ Jenkins, 34, at 500 yds, and J. Guy. 33, at OOOvds. In the teams match iPihama- won by two points' from Kaponga. the issue being very close, although Duggan (Pihania) scored only 11, and Chapman (Rahotu) only 4 at (iOOyds in the dark. During the day, dinner and afternoon ten were, provided by the ladies of the district, and was greatly appreciated. All told, there must have been 250 people present on the range. A vei'y pleasant gathering took place at the residence of ■Jlr. W. li. Wright, "St. KatherineV." Rahotu, on Tuesday night last when a intnilier of ladies and gentlemen assembled to bill farewell to Jlrs. Robertson. A very pleasant evening was spent with music and sing ing and just prior to supper Mrs. Wright, in n very happy speech presented Mrs. Robertson. On behalf of the ladies of the district, with a handsome gold loeket and chain. Mrs. Robertson, who was completely taken ?iy surprise, suitably responded, The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" concluded the gathering.
Mrs. and Miss '.MeHa'iiighan, who have been oil a three liioutlfe' tour of Australia, returned home last Friday. Mr. T. K. Parsons' left here on .Monday for a fortnight's trip to Auckland, via the Main Trunk railway. Bur ing the winter months 'butter is to be manufactured at the local factory instead of cheese.
A freehold farm, about six miles up the Kaliui r oad, formerly occupied by Mr. R. W. Hemingway, has just been I "sold to 'two young fellows from Kaponga way. It is stated that the farm realised the satisfactory price of £lO per acre. Mr. LysUght has let his bush-felling contract of 330 acres at a price said to be about 25s per acre. As showing that labor is not so scarce now as it was some twelve months ago. no less than 30 went to look at the work, whijst there were 16 tenders in for the job. We are gradually becoming a city. The latest business 'to "be started in our township is a firewood yard. On Wednesday evening next a eucliro match takes place at Baliotu between Rahotu and Pungarcliit.
