The Great Northern meeting will be concluded at 'Elileinlie to-day, the Win-, tcr Steeplechase and York Welter 'being the principal rtices on the programme.
All lied has been nominated for both the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups. C. Jenkins was in great form at Otaki and was up on four winners'. The hurdler Rangihaeta, whose ownership was. recently settled in the' Supreme Court, has joined J. HathaWay's team at Palmerston. Waioni made 110 mistake about winning the Scurry at Otaki. The mucli■boomedi brother to Motoa won liy half a dozen lengths and could have done better if required.
Te K'ainui 'ran a fair second to Le Beau in the Maiden Steeplechase 0 n Thursday, and is' a likely runner in the Tataaki Steeple to-day. The hurdler Burton is on the quickchange list. Since being] .purchased by R. Oooseuian at- Wanganui lie has again changed hands and goes to llawkc's Bay tliis timf.
Le Beau ran a good race in the Great Northern Steeple and at the home liend! appeared to have the race won. Then DeWhle brought the favorite Capitol along with a well-timed run and Kiatcre was also putting in ''long ones. 7 ' Capitol was up with Le Beau at the last fence, and going on won :bv a couple of lengths. Kiatcre came with a great dash aiul at the end caught Le Beau a few strides from home. Iviatere and Le Beau were booked to leave Auckland on Monday to fulfil their 'Stralian engagements. Tlie field for the Winter Steeplechase only comprises four horses, but the issue is decidedly open. Le Beau meets Capitol 011 13His better terms to-day than in the Great Northern Steeple, and the .three-mile journey may be more to the former's liking. Irish Rifle ran welt forward in each of his races at Ellerslie, and will again be seen under silk in the York Welter Handicap. He is well suited by a mile course, and is in capital nick to fulfil his engagements. T.wb-year-olds> by BirkeMiend "have had a great time this season,, scooping in no less tlian £40(10 in stakes alone. Bully fell in the Remuera Hurdles on Saturday and Waipu had a verv ea3y win from Swags/man. The latter is rapidly regaining his best form, and has accepted -for the Camp'licll Hurdles to-day.
The folowing were the principal winning owners at OtakiHon. J. D. Ormond . .£340. "J. Monk" .£255, A. Jackson £IBO. J. R. McDonald £l7O, (I. H. Gibson ,£l7O, H. McMana'way £135, AY. <T. Douglas .£'l3o, E. Woods . £OS, L. (i. McDonald £9O, S. Jlesena £OS, F. Rynn £45, W. Cooper £4O. Starboard put up a great race with Michaeloff in the Ranfurly Handicap on Saturday, and only went under in the last bit iby a bare length. Starboard is a really .'brilliant horse over six furlongs', and considering the short time he lias been racing one could hardly expect more. Starboard carries !tet 101b in the Fitzroy Welter Handicap. ■ There were very few on the course (says "Geraint'' in the Manawatu Standard) at Otaki who knew that The Saint had broken her .leg • when she fell at the home turn im the first race of the day, and it wuS mot for some time that the news worked, round the .paddock. This was due to the fact that the mare as soon as) ulie rose galloped oflt the course and ill amongst the spectators at the bend, the fact that she carried a "swinger' heing noted b.v very few on the stands and ill the .paddock,* their attention being w-Jth the race, The mare was shot as soon as a gun could .bo (pro-. cured. (Mr. E. Collins, who owned T-lie iSaiint, lost ithe services of Greenleaf &U'o by «n accident whilst training at Ashhuret.
