THE BREAKWATER ROAD.
In tin' face of information collated by the county clerk, and placed before the Taranaki County Council by its chairman on Monday, we should say there :s very little likelihood of the success of any proposal to erect a toll-gate on the Breakwater road. The figures show that, inclusive of the contract of 200 yank of etone, now let to Mr. F. G. Sole, the expenditure for three years from August, IWMS. to August, 11)09. will have totalled £175 15s 2d. exclusive of the cost of the foreman's time spent 011 life road. The rates paid by ratepayers on and using the Breakwater road amount to £HI 5> per annum; subsidy on district rates, £4 15s; Breakwater Hotel licence, £25: a gross, revenue of £Ol. Thus, the revenue for the throe years is £273 0s 3d, leaving about £O7 over expenditure in metal to cover cost Of spreading, casual labor, anil foreman'# time. According to this, the road is self-supporting, and there is no justification for 'placing a there.
