TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL
The Taranaki County Council held its 1 usual monthly meeting yesterday. Theie were present: Councillors •!. Rrowu, li. Stevens, M. ilopson, C. Carter, C. Andrews. »l. J. Carpenter, (j. V. 'late, and J. It. llill. foremen's reports. Moa South. —foreman Jones reported that the Mountain road was in very •fair order. The Tariki road 'needed metal 'badly from Mangauui bridge to the corner of the road, Tariki. Th>; Midhirst Dairy Company had made a new road into the Uugby road creamery. The Xgaloro-itri bridge required re-paint-ing. .Messrs A. Douch and Co. had linished carting boulder,s on the Mountain road, and had also finished their contract on the TarikLroad.—The foreman was authorised to make repairs to the Xgatoro-iti bridge.—Cr. Stevens said it was unsafe in its present condition.
Moa Riding (Junction road).—Foreman Chelling reported that the road was starting to break through in several places. Hie had taken eight feet off the Waiongona bridge and put in a filling and metalled it, at. a cost of lo*s for labor. He had done temporary repairs to llenui bridge, lie required live planks 0 x 111, 14 i'eet lung, and live plank* 8 x 14 feet long, for repairing Mangorei depot. There were three big culverts on the .Mountain road getting a bit weak, which would soon want repairs. Waitara Hiding.—Foreman llolmvs furnished a report dealing with work done in his riding during the month. He required timber for repairs to the feme on the approach to WaiongOna bridge, Devon line.—Cr. Hill said Foreman Holmes had brought under his notice the fact Hint one of the piers of
the new Waiwakaiho bridge was in a dangerous slate, owing to scour.—Cr. Tate said the weir wars partially broken ami there was certainly a scour, lie also drew attention to tlifi bad state of the asphalt roadway on the bridge.— The chairman pointed out that the engineer had re-ported there was no danger. It was evident the Council would have to choose between its engineer and one of its' foremen—Cr. Carter said if the foreman saw danger to a bridge and failed to report to the Council he would soon be in trouble.—Councillor Tate said the'foreman was satisfied with the weir and the effect of it whilst it remained intact.—it was eventually decided to call the engineer'* attention to the state
of the weir recently constructed by him and to ask him to furnish a report to
the next meeting, Omata Hiding (north) —Foreman lluse reported that the road was in fairly good order. There had been 30,000 feet
of sanvn timber carted over the roads from Carlson's mill during the month. Omata Riding (south). Foreman
Kros'nan reported that Julian's and Corbett's teams of bullocks worked three days ploughing up old metal. F. (J. and E. Sole, contractors, had carted out and deposited on the road 1208 yards of broke?i stone, the average working day being 8!) Ms yank. The Kaihilii and Stony River bridges had been strengthened and stayed by J. Penwarden to let the crusher pass over, lie required deck planks for the Kaihihi a<id Stony River , bridges for maintenance, while' heavy carting was going on. The contractors' carts cut up the water-table*' on tlie Pitone Ilill badly. It would take two men a day to repair the same.—The eontractors will be called upon to make good the damage done to the Pitone Hill.
Hurworth Riding.—Foreman Eva reported that the roads under his supervision were in good order. Mr, T. Collins had completed his contract for carting three hundred and fifty yards of bnuldeivs on the Carrington'road. Mr. Coddard had made good progress on contract No. 130, Ratanui, Carrington road.
Hurworth Riding.—Foreman Norris reported that there were a few bad places in the branch roads off the Elliot road, but as he had no metal vet he could not repair them. Otherwise the roads under his charge were in failorder. Mr. Richardson had not finished the carting of the boulders. Mr. J. 11. Colesby had not made a start vet. THE HURWORTH RIDING.
Mr. J. J3. Rov, county solicitor, in re-, plv to a qtftry from the Council as to whether the Council could legally transfer a portion of the Omata riding debit to the llumvorth riding, which liad retell Ily been constituted out of 'the Omata riding, stated that there was /,o provision whatever in the Counties Act. 1008, 'Whereby, upon the severance of a part of a riding as in the present case there -hall be an adjustment of accounts between the old riding and the new riding. lie therefore advised that the Council could not transfer a portion of the Oinata riding debt to the new Hurworth riding.

Hilling complained that the I pper Carrington road, from the end of the metal to the ■boundary of the Oak'ira district, was almost impassable during tile greater part of the year. The Camngton lioiid Hoard hat! obtained a loan of t.liiu for the purpose of inot.illing a portion of this' road, entitliii" them, lie thought, to a .C for ,C subsidy. J!ut the Board had received only £21)0 of the subsidy, and he asked the Council to collect the.balance.—Cr. Carter stated that a ,f20() subsidy had been secured. He moved that application for a further grant be made, on the ground that the road was used by numerous Crown tenant,i who paid all their rates into another road district.—Carried NATIVE HATES.

The Public Works Department forwarded authority for the expenditure of j £SO 011 the < Harrington road, this amount being the unexpended balance of the authority for C2OO issued to the road board.—To be applied for.
