C, Parley, alius t Percy -Vat King, pleaded guilty to steal- • ing jewellery and other articles of the value of .€2l, the property of Mrs. Adam Cowan; also to Hie theft of .C 22 10s belonging to Henry Hnyward. Chief Detective Bishop stated that accused arrived in the Dominion from England in January last. While in Christchurch he became acquainted with Henry Haywnrd. of the Patbe Pictures, who recommended Mrs. Cowan to allow him to become a 1 boarder at her boarding-house, While j he was at the hoarding-house various I petty thefts occurred, followed by the j theft of a large sum belonging to Mr. Hayward. Immediately afterwards, Mrs. I Coward discovered that a quantity of j her jewellery hail been stole :i. Accused I had complained bitterly to Mi's Cowan I «ftcr the police had searched iiiiu, and } Mis. Cowan told him that if be bad : nothing to be afraid of he had better | stay and sec the matter out, He left I Christchurch, however, that morning for Little River, (subsequently lie* returns! j to town, and. knowing the police were, after him, went to Governor's Hay. i Coming back to the city, he proceede'l iby a slow, train t„ Ashburton, and thence to Inverenrgill, where ho received ,1 sentence of six months for theft from u hoicl. In addition to the two charges mentioned in the information, there was good evidence to show that accused hal been guilty of stealing money from various hotels in Chrislelmreh.' The Magistrate imposed a sentence of six months' imprisonment on each charge, the terms to run concurrently and to come into.operation nt the end of his present sentence.
