DISTRICT NEWS

STRATFORD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford was holiday-keeping on the 3rd mat. in honor of His Royal Georgeship. There was a eonventon of noLicense delegates from various parts of Taranaki, over 50 being present, including the Rex. b\ W. Isitt. The Ngaire Gardens, a favorite resort of youno* and old, were tell patronised, and the golf links, hockey grounds and football games drew their supporters. The chief item on the bill of fare was the game Stratford v. Star, and quite a crowd rolled up to see the once-famous Stars take the field, against the bone and sinew of Stratford. Clement Wragge had prophesied a number of falling stars, and he should have been there to see them. The score at the end—Stratford 28, Star 4 —is hardly a fair criterion of the game, the blacks playing a very determined game to the finish.

The tranquility of Broadway was rudely disturbed on Wednesday night, when a number of men from one ot the east road contracts started out on a razzle, and to paint the town red. Language was plentiful and sufficiently variegated to suit the most fastidious. By 8 o'clock Sergeant Cullen's Swiss chalet was full, and ' standing room only' was posted up outside. On Thursday morning six weary and dilapidated specimens made their bow to Messrs. Sole and Ward, J'sP., who, in the state oi the Government Treasury, thought it a wise policy to assist in finding something towards tiding Sir Joseph over the financial depression, and called on tiiem to contribute various sums from live killings to five pounds. The money was paid, and the sergeant's guests took tlieir departure.

Mr. .lumps Robson and family were farewelled on Thursday night by the people of Ngaire, and they richly deserved it. For very many years they have always been at the head of everything for a deserving object. They intend taking up their residence in 'New Plymoutii.

Broadway is being remetalleil. and ic is to be hoped the Council will blind and put tile steam roller over it; failing that they might get the Straker waggon and load it up with school children. It might fill the bill.
