TARA2JAKI VOLUNTEER TEAMS' > CHAMPIONSHIP. - ■ THE SHIELD COMPETITION. The first 1 team match for volunteer epmpanies for the championship shield, to be held by the winning team for twelve months, was fired at the Waiwakaiho Range yesterdiy afternoon under favorable conditions. Teams were entered from the Taranaki Guards (2), • Btham Rifles and Taranaki Rifles. The Stratford Bifle Club also fired, as toe /guests of the Taranaki Guards, their score, of course, not counting for the volunteer championship. The club men ehot particularly well, and put up th? best aggregate of the day, beating the Guards, who proved the winners of the shield, by a small margin. The shooting for the shield was exciting. When the Guards' No. 1 team and the Taranaki fiiftes left the 200 range, the former were leading by one point, and at the SOD yards both teams scored the same
