AMUSEMENTS.

WEST'S PICTURES. West's Pictures entertainment last night was given ia aid of the Recreation Sports Ground fund, and there was again a very large audience. The pie turcs presented were another complete change, but there was no change in the high-class quality of the subjects and their production. snapshots in St. Petersburg and a panorama ot Benares were the two scenes that had in them a full education in' the scenes and customs found in those two widely distant cities. The Russian series was remarkable for the pictures of the fountains playing in the Imperial Castle grounds, and .India's hundreds bathing in the sacred waters of the Ganges lonncd the greater portion of the Benares panorama. Humorous pictures there were : i abundance, and these set the audience in roars. In fact, the antics of some of the audience in their paroxysms of laughter were worth far more than the price usually charged for laughter provokers. A tragic love story.of Tylda, the lion-tamer, introduced a' fine study of lions in captivity, and the fearlessness of their trainers. " Wonderful Eggs," ••Freddy's Little Love Affair."

"Two Pigtails." and "The Elixir ;of Breams'' were comic films that will form the topic of many a conversation to-day. During the evening the audience, on the motion of his Worship the Mayor, acclaimed a hearty vote of thanks to the management for their genvrosity towards the Recreation Sports Ground.

TO-NIGHT. To-night there will be another complete change of programme. TO-MOIMOW'S MATINEE. To-morrow afternoon will be given an " educational matinee," when the scholars of New Plymouth senuols will be admitted at reduced rates, and will liav . a chance of competing in an essay competition for valuable prizes. The whole programme will be of an educational character. The subject of the essays will be the Danish Margarine Industry, and the prizes will be awarded for the pupils giving the best idea of the industry as conveyed by the pictures. Competitors are to be divided into tw classes, and there are three prizes in each class, apart from special prizes. The judging will be done by the Education Board's Inspectors. Fuller particulars arc contained in the West's Pictures advertisement.
