TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Great Northern Hurdle race will be run to-morrow. Good acceptances have been received for the Otaki meeting, which takes place on Thursday and Friday, and winners appear to be hard to "pick The withdrawal of North Head, Audax and Maidi from the Great Northern Hurdles has upset a lot of doubles. Others to drop out at the final payment were Exmoor, Kremlin, Snip, Oryx, Poplar and Maharanui, but none of the latter were much fancied for the race On Wanganui form Bclario and Jackpot are expected to show good form at Ellersl-ie. Waipu ran badly at Wanganui but nas a liking for the Auckland course and won the big hurdle race last year with 0.13 in the saddle. Paritutu won ra.good style at Avondale, and will carry a heap of money next time he starts. It is to be hoped that the bad luck which follows "Jervey" George in big races will take a day off tomorrow. Of the Aucklanders, Irish and sol are in form, and although only a dozen horses are expected to face the barrier an interesting race is expected. Much, regret must be expressed that that good sportsman Mr. G. P. Donnelly ■has decided to give up racing, and his team of horses will be offered for sale very shortly. One of their number, El Dorado, has been leased to Mr. Troutbeck.

Taking a line through Mendip, Astraea seems to be well treated with 0.7 in the Raukawa Cup, but some horses run just as well under 8.7 as 0.7. and Astraea is better suited by having a strong horseman on top, and such an individual is hard to find to ride the minimum weight.

Auratus caused a favorable impression by easily winning a hurdle race on the second day at Wanganui, and even with 11.6 against his name lie is not reckoned out of it in the hurdle race at OtaKi. Rohepotae is moving well in his work and will probably be taken io the Ha\vke> Bay and Napier Park winter meetings, which open on the 10th hist. The death is announced from Dunedin of Ben Curtis, one time owner of Casket, winner of the Great Easter Handicap and other big races. The three-year-old Courier (Advance —Brown Spec) was found dead on Thursday in a paddock on Fred Tilley's place at Fordell. Cornier was being spelled at the time, and appaventlv injured himself galloping about the paddock. The colt was a double at the Eginont racing meeting, and was looked upon as a promising sort. Te Koliau's name was missed from the telegraphed list of nominations for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Considering how many great sportsmen have spent fortunes on horses in the endeavor to win the great Knglis'a Derby, his Majesty King Edward must be accounted very lucky to have won the blue ribbon three times in fourteen years, the horses to carry his color successfully being Persimmon, Diamond Jubilee, and Minora. Apropos the King's Derby a good tale is told. Soon after the King, then Prince ot Wales, had won his first Derby, he, in company witii a friend, hailed a hansom in Piccadilly, and gave instructions to drive to Whitehall. When they alighted, the friend, in presenting the driver witli half a crown, inquired whether he was aware whom he bad been/driving. " Now, don't come it, mister, please," remarked cabby.

"There ain't a day passes but what somebodv tries to kid me as W the Shah of Persia or the Hemperor William 'as bin a-riding behind my lot." " T am not joking," was the smiling reply. " The gentleman who has just alighted is the Prince of Walvs." " Wot 0-" came from the cabby, with an incredulous wink. " Then you can tell the gentleman that's just alighted as 'ow the 'orse wot's bin a-pullin' 'im along is Persimmon."
