The Rugby Union i(t a general" meel- | ing overwhelmingly rejected Mr. Byrne's I motion that professionalism existed and 1 that the committee had not consistently enforced the professional laws. SOUTHERN DIVISION. PATEA v. WAIMATE. (Special to "News"). Patea, Saturday Night. Patea seniors ell'ecited a surprise by defeating Wahuate seniors by 0 to 0. The game was very even and keenly contested to the last minute. Tlie superiority of the Waimate forwards in scrum and close work was counterbalanced I>y the pace of the l'atea forwards in the loose and the soundness of the backs. Tlie game was chielly confined to the forwards. There were occasional glimpses of concerted back play. In tlie first spell, with the wind, C. Sheahan scored a try and Strachan kicked a penalty goal and a goal from a mark for l'atea, while in the second spell Young scored a try and Franklin kicked a, penalty goal for Waiinate.
SATURDAY COMPETITIONS. The Saturday Association's' competition for the Sole Cup was continued on Saturday under glorious weather conditions. WAREHOUSES v. GUARDS. This match was played* on the Recreation Grounds, and* a hard-fought and interesting match ended in favor of the Warehouses by 8 points to 8. Ten minutes after the play commence?! the Warehouse forwards attacked the Guards' line, and a loose rush ended in Johns touching down. Richards' kick] went wide. Guards' then took a turn at attacking. From a scrum in front of their opponents' goal, Walsh snapped up and crossed the line. Main missed an easy kick. Continuing the attack, the Guards again worked on to the line, where a loose rush ensued, Skipper carrying the oval across and touching down; Cofcer failed to increase the score. This rallied the Warehouse team, and .they soon reversed the order of play. A serum near the Guards' line gave Jury the'ball. He quickly transferred to Stoh'r, ami the latter to Dynes, who evaded two opponents and scored between the uprights. Sto'nr added the major points. Guards then kept up a strong attack, but failed to increase their score. Mr. Roeh referoed. A noticeable and most objectionable feature of the match was the incessant talk indulged in right through, and on one or two occasions some of the players' showed a tendency to dispute Hie referee's decisions. Those players who are also playing in the Thursday eup competitions were the worst offenders.
CIVIL SERVANTS v. ROVERS. These teams mef on the racecourse ground, and a good game resulted' in a_ win for the Service by 13 points to nil. Mr. Way refereed.
