MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
CRUELTY TO A IIOIiSU. A short sitting of-flic Police Court held yesterday. Messrs JI F Russell ami (J. E.' Bellringer.' Justices presided. Frank Joseph, butcher, Devon Street pleaded guilty to a charge of crucllv -ill-treating a. horse by -causing it to lie driven in a cart at a Lime when it was m a very weak and starved condition and suffering from a neglected sore and two cuts on its fore-legs. Hie animal fell down in Devon Street recently. Defendant was convicted and lined -'Os and costs 7s.
A TECHNICAL OFFENCE. Violet Harvey pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Infants Act, lilOS. i lie | charges were laid iii connection with the death of an infant named Elsie Nicholl, who died in defendant's licensed home on April 20, defendant being its foster mother. The breaches consisted of failing to notify the constable in charge of the nearest police station and in permitting the iiody to lie buried without being so authorised Inwriting under tin- hand of the coroner. The offence was only a technical one. the case being brought to draw attention to the provisions of the Act. A certificate had been given by a doctor who attended the child, and the local inspector of foster homes had been notified of tne death, but defendant was not aware of the provisions of the Act. In tiie circumstances the defendant was convicted ami discharged.
