In his charge to the f.Jramt Jury, his Honor regretted that there were jio fewer than 42 oifem."s on the calendar, involving charges against a uiucli larger number of persons. J'or the most part those were -simply ordinary charge* of theft, house-break-mg, false pretences, forgery, etc., but | the number was large, and formed a .sorry record of an increase in the i"charges of crime. The Grand .Jury returned true bills in nearlv every ease. LVrev (.assidy, for breaking'and entering and theft at Dargaville, received sen tence of eighteen ninmlis' imprisonment. William Dinnie, alias Harris, and Tho*. I'anning. were eonvicte.kof stealing a lady's purse in a railway carriage ou the Main Trunk express whilst the woman was asleep. Dinnie was sentenced to three years' and binning to two and a half years' imprisonment. A voung man named Carl Fnnicis Walker, lately a clerk in the employ of the lion. .1. A. Toh'. Crown Solicitor, ph.-,,!,.,! guilty to 25 charges of forging his employer's signature, involving a total sum of C-IK), and was sentenced to three voaiV imprisonment.
Wellington, Last Night. At the Supreme Court fo-dav, .John 1 hennas Driscoll. who had adinitte! stealing a portmanteau and contents, valued at a :, s (j,i from the City l|ullet Motel, was admitted to probation for twelve mouths.
