HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE, j By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. The Industries and Commerce Department has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, May 22: — The mutton market is overstocked and depressed, and not likely tu recover from the depression for some time, i'anterIbury jis (quoted sit 2%d, (other than Canterbury 2%d. River Plate mutton is in large supply, and, being strongly pushed for sale, is quoted at 2'/ a d. The lamb market is very weak, and, the shipments now arriving being very heavy, the supply exceeds tile demand, although low prices are increasing the output. Canterbury is quoted at 4'/ 2 d, other than Ciniterburv 4d, Australian 3%d.
The beef market is firm, with a better demand. Stocks 01 New Zealand 011 hand are light, and supplies of American chilled beef small. New Zealand hinds are quoted 3%d, fores 2y 3 il. The butter market is very firm. Supplies are decreasing on account of tlie dry weather, and there is great demand in the market in order to secure supplies. Choicest New Zealand is quoted at 10(is, Danish litis, Siberian 103s, Australian 102s.
The cheese market is very firm, with a good demand. There are only small supplies 011 hand. White is quoted at 05s, colored 07s,
The hemp market is quiet, but moderate business is doing. There is a better demand for .Manila from America. The market is dependent on Manila reports. New Zealand good to fair grade on spot £22 15s per ton. fair grade £2l 10s; fair current luanila 011 spot £2l 10s: May to July shipments, New Zealand good fair grade £2 10s, fair grade £r2l; fair current manila £'2l. The luanila output was 10,000 bales. The cocksfoot market is very quiet, and there is no business doing.
The wheat market is firmer and is very likely to continue. New Zealand long-berried wheat on spot, ex-granavv, per quarter of 45101b 4(!s Gd, short-berried wheat ditto 45s Od. The oats market is firm and prices continue to advance. New Zealand oats, short (sparrow-bills), ex-granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841b ills Od, New Zealand oats (Danish), ex-granary, per quarter of 3201b 20s 3d. The beans and pease market remains firm. New Zealand beans, f.a.q., old crop, per 5041b 30s; New Zealand peas, partridge, per 5041b 47s Od. The kauri gum market is firm, with an 'improved demand. Ordinary to'fair three-quarter scraped 105s. fair to halfscraped 105s, fair half- to tliree-quarter-scraped 90s, pickings common to good 50s, bush fair to good pale and amber scraped 1455.
