Cute 7.1, Gapon 7.1, Liza 8.9, British Peer 0.7. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The Wauganni. Takapuna and Nor'll Otago winter meetings will be conelultil to-day. The whole town knew all about Valentine in the Maiden on Saturday, and look out at a short price. Cyrene was well fancied for the Borough Handicap on Saturday, but failed to r uu up to track form." Irish Rille won easily in good time, considering tne state of thee ourse.

The Wanganui Steeplechase saw the survivors of the old junipers, Mocassin, Tilson and Kiatere, being the "old stagers" of the crowd. Xogi. Jack Pot, Emus, Clarabelle and I'layniato came to grief and the race must "have provided what might be called a disastrous fall in meat-horse-meat. Before the meeting a number of horseowners approached the stewards of ihe Wauganni J.C. and drew their attention to the stiffness of the course, but the club's officials could not see any cause for complaint. After Saturday's race there is no wonder that only five horses have accepted for today's race.

Another good horse was added to the Big Paddock on Saturday, when Master i Douglas was shot after falling in the Century Hurdle Race. Mr. F. Attfield's fine horse had a short hut brilliant ca-1 reer on the turf, winning consistently I on the flat and over hurdles. His latest cftorU at the Hawke's Bay meeting when he won the open hurdle race cadi day, are fresh in the minds of all sport followers, and he had manv backers for the. Great Northern Hurdle Race, in which the son of Douglas was on the same mark as Paritutu with list 61b. Much sympathy will be felt for Mr. Atfcfield, whose loss is a serious one, and' the turf can ill afford to lose one of its brightest stars in the jumping line. The Daystar gelding, Compass, must be reckoned unlucky. In last year's Century Hurdles he filled the roll of runner-up to Waipu, and in Saturday's race finished in a like position behind Belano.

Advocate was in heavy commission away from the course on Saturday, and paid a surprisingly large price, considering his partiality for the Takapuna course. Horses for courses fits the case exactly.

Sir Artegal added another bracket to his record on Saturday, when he scored an easy victory in the Royal Handicap. The chestnut has done well over short courses recently, and was accorded solid 60lid_ support in his recent success. Irish-Rifle scored an easy victory on Saturday, and has gone up 131bs in the Winter Oats, in which race he led Ballarat home hist year.

Wauchope appears to r* staving better at the end of the season 'than at mid-summer, and the "Freedom Jiorse created a surprise by his bold showin» in the mile and a-quarter event at Taka° puna on Saturday. Wauchope figures in the Britannia Handicap, run over a mile this' afternoon. '

The Tarannki-trained Starboard ran a decent race in the Ngataringa Handicap at Takapunn. Jjnt the bad luck experienced at Hawera recently stuck to the Daystar gelding There is no doubt 1i» can travel fast, and „o one would liegrndse Mr B Sieholfe a win if the bay got home to-day. - Jfaiki < stored another success in the pony ranks on Saturday, and the Uhlan lilliputian should prove „ good winner for Mr J. George. Malta is Only a little bit of horseflesh, but can fly for a short distance and has the advantage of being a quick beginner. °
