WHITELEY ORCHESTRAL CONCERT.

The Whiteley Orchestra had every reason to be gratilied with its reeoption by the large audience which assembled at Whiteley Hall last evening to listen to the concert provided by the society. The orchestra comprised twenty-one instrumentalists, under the conductorship of Mr. C. 11. Lawn, and it was evident from the manner in which the various items were rendered that the members of the orchestra had practised assiduously for some time past. Although only a young organisation, Ihe creditable milliner in which the orchestra acquitted itself surprised a good manv of last night', audience, and it is sifc to sav that anv future concert of the society will lie looked forward to wuh pleasurable anticipation by music-lovers. Every one of the items was of a popular and pleasing nature, easily understandable by the ordinary public, the programme comprising selections from "Faust," "Lohengrin," "Barber of Seville," "Lucia di Lamiuerinoor,'' and "Poet and Peasant," also the "Constellation" March; and in addition to the programme number.'- the orchestra played Schubert', Serenade, with Mr. .1. rlichcmls as the cornet 'joloist. A flute duet ("England"i by Messrs. R. Lee and C. A. Benbow was very pleasingly rendered. The instrumental pieces were supplemented by a number of vocal items by well-known amateurs. "Miss Teuton ' contributed " The Swallows." ami as an encore piece ' Waiata-poi" (by Mr. Alfred Hill). Jliss Ward »ang ".Sunshine and Rain." and "The FonvLcnvcd Clover'' in respunse to an encore. Mr. J. W. lla-l:nn received an encore for his first Rein, "Because," and in response gave "Still is the Xight," and also contributed an item ! u the second part. All these songs were rendered very nicely indeed, the sing-1 ers being in good voice and singing with expression. Misses E. Buckman a'.id Douglas and Mr. G. Bruce-Lewis were the accompanists on the piano. The funds of the orchestra should he enhanced to some, extent, as a result of the concert, and as each succeeding appearance of the society ba« shown a distinct improvement in It's musical productions, it well deserves all the eneonragcmcit [ that can be given to it.
