THE GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS.

The Minister for Public Works, in'the course of a statement on the subject of railway construction, said the Government had no intention of curtailing the expenditure in that direction. "We want to get railways ami roads to open up the country which is lying idle.'' lie said. ''Kver.y one of the new railways ill the North l-land is going to open up an enormous extent of country for settlement."
