THE WOOL MARKET. I London, May 17. Wool—There was an excellent sale and brisk competition from all quarters. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S GABLE. By Telegraph—Press Association; Wellington, Tuesday. A cable from the High Commissioner, dated May 15, reports:— Mutton.—-The market is dull; being over-supplied with heavy carcases 0° mutton, poor demand continues. Canterbury light-weight is quoted at 3%d, heavy-weight North Island lightweight 2%d, heavy-weight 2'/ 4 d. llic lamb market is steady, the low prices increasing the output. Canterbury is quoted at 4%d and North Island at 4%d. Heavy-weight is selling at about 3%d. Beef.—The market is firm and the demand is chiefly hinds. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3'/,d and forequarters at 2'/ 4 d. Butter.—The market is firm, with more inquiry, and there is a better demand. Choicest Xew Zealand is quoted at 101s, Danish 112s, Siberian 98s, and Australian 98s.
Cheese.—The market is linn, with an upward tendency. Supplies are running short, and there is a general uctivc demand. New Cealano white is quoted at 04s, and coloured at (IBs.
Hemp.—The market is very being affected by increasing arrivals from Manilla. There is little demand for New Zealand. Good, lair spot £23 ton, fair grade on spot £2l 15s, failcurrent Manilla on spot £2l ss, MayJuly shipments of New Zealand good fair £22 15s, New Zealand fair grade £2l 10s, fair current Manilla £11) 15s. The Manilla output is 27,000 bales. There is no pressure to sell.
Cocksfoot Seed.—'He market is quiet, but holders are firm. Last quotations 755.
Wheat.—The market is rather unsettled. There has been a gradual decline, but the market is now firm, owing to reduced supplies. A good demand continues, with no change in prices. Xew Zealand long-berried wheat on spot ex-granary, per quarter of 41Milbs, 45s (Id'; Xew Zealand slioilberricd wheat ditto, 44s Od.
Beans.—New Zealand old crop f.a.q. per 504 lbs, 35s lid. ■ Peas.—Xew Zealand partridge, per 504 lbs, 47s Od. There has been 110 material'change in the market.
Wool.—The market remains firm. Bradford tops are quoted as follows: Thirty-sixes low crossbreds Is, forties do, Is Id, forty-fours medium Is 2d, fifties halfbreds Is 6%d, qiiurtcrbreds Is lOd, sixties merinos 2s 3d.
