J a cross-examination he stated that two ol Bourke's wounds could Hare been caused by a knife, bin tile wound on the cheek by a blunt instrument. Detective Mcllvency gave eiiurnee regarding the statements made to him by voimelly, and stated as absolutely untrue Murray's evidence that he (witness) misread Murray's statement regarding Connelly's Hokitika confession. The judge was of opinion that Menveney should have taken question and uuswer, implying to Mr. Stringer, Jkllveney said that Connelly's statement, " 1 tiioue killed Bourke," was made in reply to Mellveney's question, "What is it you now sayt" and Connelly's statement that Hallinen and Andersen were innocent men was Connelly's own remark. This closed the Crown's case,the other witnesses for the Crown being required for rebuttal. Mr. Jlaulon, for accused, laid stress mi the fact that much of the evidence for the prosecution pointed to Hallhen and Andersen being the perpetrators. He tailed Harcourt, n barmaid at Lennie's, who saw blood istains lon Hiillinaoi's clothes before the row adjoining tlrs tish shop, and Bull and Lcnnie, who also saw stains. Fmser, boatswain of the Canopua, gave evidence regarding the stains on Hallinen's elotlies. Corkery, licensee of the Itoyal Hotel, ' stated lliat Jlallinen gave adescription of his bar and the assault on a man answering Bourke. Hallinen was sober, but was apparently amused about something. McDonald, laborer, gave evidence substantially the same us Covkery's. Constable Butler was under examination when the Court adjourned.
