MR! NEWTON KING'S report. On Tuesday, 11th inst., I held my sale of above produce at Stratford. The quantity "of produce offered was the largest I have catalogued since the beginning of these sales. It comprised 2802 ox and cow hides, 103 yearlings', 832 calfskins, 5773 sheepskins, 47 bales and 25 Backs of wool, 71 casks and 43 tms tallow, and the usual assortment of horse' hair,'cwtails, ctn. The 2802 '" hides included over a thousand from the freezing works. The freezer ox commanded special" competition; advancing %d to %d, realising as high as S>/ S d for extra stout. Competition throughout was keen. Wool and skins met a hardening market, and best tallow advanced 5s to 10s per ton.* Cow hides fell '/ 8 d " to %d. Calfskins and inferior tallow maintained late values. The consistent ■ support accorded this sale by both vendor and-purchasur is extremely gratifyin?, and the number of hides submitted psaces- the Taranaki sale to the fore, so that no large buyer of hides in the Dominion can afford to ignore the tale or absent himself from it. The steadv increase of the. quantities of ■ wool'sold is, ample proof, that clients arc satisfied with returns, and as an indication of. a growing preference for a local market over one at a distance.
