EGMOKT R. C. WINTER MEEIiNG. FIRST.DAY. The Eginont Racing Club commenced its winter meeting, for hacks only, yesterday.* The weather in the morning was decidedly cool, but crisp and dry. The indications were none too promising, but fortunately the ominous-looking clouds withheld their threatened showers. As usual, the arrangements and appointments of the club weic firstclass, and the course was as lit ..s care could make it under the weather conditions existing immediately prior to the meeting. The times registered snow its splendid condition. The attendance of the public was large, and bett r man most people had expected. The trains from north and south brought in heavy complements of the sporting public, but the southern contingent was lessened by the heavy rains which fell during .the night and early morning. The lawns, though fairly well filled, did not present the bright and attractive appearance usually associated with the summer Still, the throng of well"d>essed lady devotees of the sports of kings was quite a feature. The Hawera Municipal Brass Baud played a lengthy programme of excellent music, under the baton of ■ Bandmaster Brunette. Fourteen bookmakers called the odds, and each paid a fee of £ls for the privilege. The totalisator receipts for the day were £4747 - or an improvement npon the figures for the first day's races when the investments totalled i'-tGSo. The starting throughout an excellent day's racing could not !>c cavilled at, and toe club's handicapper provided some close and exciting finishes. Results:—
