Results of yesterday's racing at Hawera will be found on the fourth page. It was stated on the Ha wera course yesterday that one solitary £1 ticket represented the stable's investment on Mulga Bill. And that ticket was made up by the lady connections of the establishment.
Ai Stratford owner looked with wondering eyes at a simple-looking stranger from the farm who asked him, in all seriousness, "Is your horse a trier b the Cup?" i The Egmont Club put up a good performance by improving on last year's tote figures. Such an experience is the exception rather than the rule this fail. It was reported yesterday that Clemency has changed hands, and goes to Mauaia. The first of the horses engaged in the Tawhiti Scurry arrived in the " bird-cage" three minutes late. The last of them was seven minutes lat.-. • All the trainers were lined £1 a-piece. Fop the rest of the day the nags were very prompt. Last year the cup investments totalled £OOB. Yesterday's punters had £075 to spare for the event. In the hurdles a lot of money was shut out. The totalisator investments on the last race were £OBO odd. Auratus, Maharanui, and Nova made their first appearance yesterday over the sticks. Maharanui found the going suitable, and nearly notched a win. Turf, followers will he rushing off to Hawera to-day to make up what they lost yeste'rday or. lose what they won on the opening day—it all comes to the same finale—of the Egmont winter meeting. I have to tender my sincere regrets to those punters who followed my misinformation r« Somali yesterday. Should they think of petitioning Carnegie for a grant, I would have much pleasure in endorsing their application for assistance. About 373'/ 3 persons were making anxious inquiries for "Moturoa" last evening, and one agitated individual mentioned, en passant, the art which Johnson specialises in—per telephone, of course! 1 would recommend him to have a go at the pin-headed negro, per wireless telegraph for safety. It would he a great ,: go"! Fair acceptances have been received for the second, day's races at Hawera, and winners appear to be well concealed. Goodwin Park carried his welter weight like a racehorse in the Waihi Handicap, and it should be interesting to note how he performs under a lighter scale of weights hi the Manaia Handicap to-day.
Mallet l;ad the services of Jenkins n the Hawera Cup, and held a handy position turning into the straight, but the last furlong beat him, ,and lie finished just outside the placed divis. n. Mulga'Bill ran surprising well in the Railway Handicap, making hacks of the other runners. If he runs honestly today even 9.4 may not s'top him. Clemency van two pood races yesterday with his usual luck, and is one of j our most consistent hack sprinters. Toanga was reserved for the Te'cgraph Handicap, and with C. Jenkins on board was well fancied, but ran disappointingly, and was never dangerous. Somali had a runaway victory in the Tongahoe Hurdle. He does not appear 10 be haivhly treated with 10.5 to-dav. Maharanui ran a line race at (lie fir':t time of asking and should not be long in paying Ms way across the battens. Wnione was beating Maharanui across the fences last week and won the Ladies' Purse yesterday. Waione may be given a inn in the Manaiwapon Hurdles, in which the Waiuku gelding has (Ist alb. Redwing is a greatly improved filly, and her victory in the Telegraph Handicap was characterised by a really fine das'h of brilliancy. (Redwing is engaged in the Opcke and liorough Handicaps. Curoneted ran disappointingly in the Cup race, and has evidently put in his best gallops on the training track. Genuine finished fast over the last furlong of the Railway Handicap, and may possibly be much benefited by the ga'.lop.
