' HANMER PRISON CAMP ENQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurcli, Last Night. Mr. H. W. -W. Bishop, S.M., left Christeliurch for Hanmer to-day to hold an enquiry into the discipline maintain- > ed at the prison camp. Mr. W. C. Kensington, Under-Secretary for Lands, and Mr. E. C. Goldsmith, Commissioner of Crown lands for Canterbury, went to Hanmer to-day to report on the progress «f the plantations. It is understood that the question whether the work there and at other plantations shail be extended or not will depend on the report of the officers mentioned. DANGEROUS LEVEL CROSSINGS. Palmerston N., Last Night. The conference ,oi Chambers of Commerce of the East and West Coasts today resolved-that owing to the sej-ious loss of life at railway crossings the time ha« arrived when the Government should appoint crossing-keepers to guard the railway line in busy thoroughfares. SOUTHLAND EMPLOYERS' ASSOCIATION. Invercargill, Last Night. The Southland branch of the Employers' Association decided to confirm the resolution recently passed by the Advisory Board protesting against the inclusion of the preference to unionists clauses in industrial awards. It was decided to recommend employers' to observe June 3rd as a general holiday. A STEWARD ARRESTED. ' Invercargill, Last Night. At Bluff yesterday the chief steward of the s.s. Opawa was arrested on a charge of smuggling boots into the Dominion. A HOSPITAL COMPLAINT. Invercargill, La>i Night. The Hospital Trust to-iiight considered a complaint that a patient had been allowed to go unattended to a dentist's. The Trust resolved that after hearing the evidence the Trust thought that the treatment received by Selwood (the patient) 'whilst in the hospital was all right, but that it would nave been better if the patient had not • been sent to a dentist to have his teeth, extracted. The doctor is to be asked to be more careful in future in allowing patients to go out. Some feeling was shown at the meeting. * HEAVY WEATHER. Wellington, Tuesday. A sou'-easter, with heavy rain, is being experienced here,. Vessels arriving report heavy seas in the Straits. The Monowai took 18 hours on the run from Napier. Other steamers are delayed.
