Mr. Henry Hnyward conceived a I happy notion, says the Wangomii | Chronicle, when he "decided to give Britishers on this side of the ocean an opportunity of being pleased and puzzled by the world-renowned mysteries associated with the name of Maskelyne and Devant. Nothing more enjoyable has I been offered to the public of Wangantii, and Mr. Haywnrd may rest assured bis enterprise will not go unrewarded. His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to.accc'pt from Mr. W. F. Gordon, who was' secretary and one of the first workers in respect of yesterday's functions, two,photographs of his own work. One of these was the wellknown picture, "A Study Table," and the other a photograph of his pen-and-ink manuscript of '■ The Lord's Prayer " in Maori. His Excellency said lie was very pleased to receive thes P as mementoes of the memorable function of that afternoon.
The Railway Serial Club has decided to resume the "socials" which became s'o popular last winter. The first of the 11)09 series was held last night in the Brougham Street Hull, nearly a hundred people being present. The euchre prizes were won by Miss Batchelor (13 games) and Mrs. Trigger (12 games), Messrs L. Callaghan (13 games) and L. Hammond (12 games), the latter pair playing off a tie. An excellent supper was provided by the committee, and a few horn's' dancing followed. The floor was good, Mrs. George supplied capital music, and Mr. A. C. Maxwell officiated as M.C.
