A conference of the Australian 'l:isti lute of .Marine Engineers and the steamship Owners' Association arrived at ti settlement in regard to engineers' wages and conditions uf labor. The settlement embodied a memorandum which both parties asked the Federal Arbitration Court to treat as au award of the Court. The settlement provides that on steamers of a hundred horse-power first engineers are to receive 020 a month; second engineers 0.10; third engineers .014; 100 to, 150 horse-power ,' .021, ,010, ami .Oli; 150 to 200 horse-power, 1.022, .017, ami Xl 4; 200 to 250 horsepower, .024, :018, and 015, and fourth engineers .012; 250 to ;Wil horse-power, stt!s, .OIH, .015. and JL',l2; 350 to 450 horse-power, 027 10s, .0.10, .010, and 013; upwards of 450 horse-power, .020, 0211, Odd, and .013. The wages of fifth class engineers ,012, .sixth class .011, seventh class .010. The agreement, which is for three years from Hay Ist, is stated to be practically the same as that under which the engineers have been working, excepting the conditions regarding the wages. The president agreed to certify the agreement, so it will practically have the. .same effect as au award o[ the i Court.
