ERUPTION ON WHITE ISLAND
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Saturday. An eruption at White Island was seen Irom the steamer Kaipara early c(n Thursday morning, from 2 a.m. to daylight. A continuous stream of black smoke, in which llame was distinctly seen rose from the island. The eruption was visible from a distance of 32 miles. Auckland, Saturday. On Friday White Island was in an unusual state of activity. Immense clouds of steam were issuing this nioriving, and dense white clouds obscured the island, but from about noon the clouds vanished and the island appeared to revert to its normal state. Three jets of black smoke seen issuing from" the southern end of the island signify, however, that it had been recently in unusual disturbance. |
