A practical suggestion was made by the headmaster of the West Uirisiehurcli School (Mr. 0. D. Hurdle) at the annual meeting of the householders. He said tluit he had for some time thoughts of suggesting a day, perhaps twice a vein, when parents could visit the school and see it in full swing. It parents received such «u invitation toe stalf would be pleased to see as many as could avail themselves of it. _ Such an institution would stimulate, interest in the school,, and incidentally in tne school committee elections. The proposal was subsequently approved by resolution of the meeting, several members commending the idea. Three English firms-Messrs Cadlmry, Messrs Krv, and Messrs ltowntree-have decided not to make ir.iy further purchase* of the eocoa produced in the islands of St. Thome and Principe, in this simple announcement is summed up the latest phase of a very long struggle. For the last few years a cry for reform in the conditions under which the unhappy natives of Angola are worked in these islands has been going on in Europe Mr. Ncvinson showed that at the time when his book was written no native had ever 'been known to return home who lind once set fool as a laborer in the islands. The grim fact and its Implications were circumstantially attested in the later investigations which these English linns and one of the leadin" German firms set on foot. The lortutmesu Government promised reform as r tbc result of the revelations of Mr. Burtt and Dr. Horton. Mr. William Cadburv's tour has convinced hmi that the Portuguese Government Ims no more than .promise. What the. effect ot these firms' high-minded actian will be so far as hastening reform is concerned, it is vet ton early to prophesy; u it is as widely imitated as it deserves to be, the result should show itself very speedk
