INSPECTION OF IMMIGRANTS
A PROPOSAL DECLINED. Received 2!t. !>.■)."> p.m. Lundoii, April 2!). Sir 11. Tozer. Queensland's Agent-Uen-eral, suggested that the Imperial Government should co-operate with Queensland in establishing a dejiot at the London docks for the inspection of immigrants, as some were possibly aliens. The Earl of Crewe replied that he was unable to agree to the proposal, which would involve a departure from the Emigration Information Office's policy, which limited the giving of information. The Central Emigration Hoard (London) has decided to establish an association "for the purpose of furthering the board's efforts to encourage, and where possible to assist, the emigration of suitable and desirable persons from the United .Kingdom to the British colonies.' 1 The association will be called "The Settlers' Information League," and its primary object is to encourage British emigrants to proceed to British colonies rather than to foreign countries. Members resident in the United Kingdom will undertake to disseminate as widely as possible the information provided by the Central Emigration Board, and to refer likely emigrants to Hie board. The founders of the new association hope in this way "to stir into life what too long have been a'llolred to remain dry bones, to provide a common platform from which to espouse a common cause, and to make a reality of Lord Rosebery's apt definition of Empire, 'a passion o't affection and family feeling, of pride and hopefulness.'"
