FIRES
By Telegraph.—Press Association, Napier, Last Night. A five-roomed dwelling, with shop attached, at ll'ort Ahuriri, owned, by George Nelson and occupied by Thomas Docherty. bootmaker, was destroyed by lire early this morning. The building was insured for £250 in the Royal Exchange, and the furniture and effects for £lO5 in the South British.
Mr. .lames Salt's residence at Vogeltown had a narrow escape last evening from destruction by fire. Mrs. Salt and her second son Gordon were at home, and were in the garden at the time of the outbreak. A chair covered with airing clothes had been placed in front of the fire. The lad had occasion to return to the house, and found that the chair had fallen into the fin 1 . By that time there was great danger of the woodwork over the chinineypiece taking (ire, but the boy kept cool, and soon doused the (lames with a few buckets of water. But for his presence of mind the house would doubtless have gone.
